Steve and I have toured with Explore Worldwide on at least 18-20 trips (I’ve lost count). Two- and three-star hotels, small pensions, and guesthouses are the norm; all very clean, adequate and/or charming. Driving from Sucevita Painted Monastery to tonight’s hotel, we passed a sign advertising a gorgeous four-star hotel and muttered, “Why couldn’t Explore have booked us into a hotel like this?” No sooner had words left mouths, when driver Marinel pulled up in front of that same hotel, Popas Turistic Bucovina, a four-star hotel.
Popas Turistic Bucovina was by far, the nicest place hotel (called a “Holiday Village” by them) in Romania and even His Royal Highness Princes Charles of England stayed here while touring through Romania.
Guests are housed in one of four Cottage complexes with different women’s names: Mirabel, Mary, Elvira and Vianora. Each cottage contained 1 suite on the ground floor, 8 double rooms and 1 single room. For some inexplicable reason, Steve and I hit the jackpot with one of the suites, albeit for only one, short night, that had a large living room, bathroom, and separate bedroom with a huge ceramic stove tucked in the corner. All rooms had free Wi-Fi, television, telephone, and mini-bar.
We quickly unpacked, uncorked a bottle of wine and sat down to sip in luxury before dinner.
The wonderful and large restaurant, bar and offices were housed in a large house a few steps away from our cottage, surrounded by gorgeous landscaping. If that isn’t enough, Popas Turistic Bucovina was in the process of building a spa. The dining room was filled with groups of pre-teens on a school outing, ready to dance their feet off after dinner.
An excellent dinner, more wine and we really hated to leave the “best of the best” in Romanian accommodations.
